Artists Bio

Born on the banks of Loch Lomond on the west coast of Scotland in 1977, brought up in Europe and South America, graduating in France and raising a family in Spain before settling in Sydney in 2017, Tilly sees the world through a broad lens and is endlessly inspired by it’s diversity.

Encouraged to pursue a business career, Tilly discovered her passion for pigment and brushes later in life and currently juggles a busy work and family life, fitting in a few hours of painting here and there in her Wahroonga studio, slowly, very slowly allowing the artist within to emerge.

Still finding her personal style and voice as an artist, Tilly plays with subject matter ranging from gumtrees to human beings to fairy bread, using colour in a playful and expressive way. Oil paint on canvas, ink on paper and even raffia and fabric scraps are all favourite mediums used in her work, aiming to immortalise the beauty of a moment or a feeling.

Artist’s statement

“Being outside is good for the soul. Through my paintings, I try to bring the outside in, immortalising the beauty of a moment, whether it's a snowgum bursting with new shoots, or native flora exploding into flower.

Working predominantly in oil paint I build the layers of a painting slowly overtime. Paying tribute to nature reminds us to slow down and helps us to ground ourselves. So, if my work makes someone stop to take one deeper breath than usual, I'm happy.”
